Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Claims First Title in Nearly 30 Months

Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's 21 victories have been achieved on hard surfaces

A comeback the Russian player secured his first championship for over two years with victory over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open final.

The Russian, a former top-ranked player, has experienced a difficult year, managing just one win at the big events and suffering a difficult moment at the US Open.

Medvedev's unpredictability on the tennis tour - and issues with his service game in specific - led to him exiting of the world's top 10 and eventually separating with long-term coach Gilles Cervara.

Currently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has steadily improved in the recent weeks - peaking in a closely contested three-set triumph over opponent Moutet.

This marks his first trophy since the Italian tournament and maiden on a hard surface since spring of 2023.

Victory also means Medvedev has won twenty-one titles at twenty-one different tournaments.

"For the first time I'm at a event with my two daughters at once, so to secure a championship is especially meaningful," stated ranked player the champion.

"This championship is in honour of my younger daughter her name, because the first title I won when my child Alisa was delivered was for her."

The tennis star, the former major winner, had been defeated in his past six championship matches, including in that event previously this season.

Medvedev's counter-punching play style and recurring outbursts on the tennis court had prompted commentators to doubt if his ability to play at the top level was over.

But the 29-year-old has altered his approach in the past month, making an effort to come to the net and compete aggressively, backed up by an enhanced serve.

He came back from a break down in the opening set against the tricky opponent, securing 4 of the concluding five games to take the lead.

The competitors exchanged breaks in the middle set before the Frenchman, attempting for his first professional victory, took control to force a decider.

The opponent saved 4 early break points in a competitive third set before Medvedev broke to fifteen to secure the win.

Appropriately, he earned the title with a shot at the net, with his opponent failing to manage a return after a lengthy match.
