Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a life-threatening incident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel crossed the track directly in front of him

The dangerous situation occurred on the third lap when safety workers were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to change his damaged front wing

Driver's Immediate Reaction

Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his race engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was observing"

"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and suddenly there were two guys dashing across the track"

"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"

Track Safety Questioned

"Obviously there's been a failure in communication at some point but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We can't understand how on a active circuit marshals can be allowed to just sprint across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but it really can't happen again"

Official Investigation Underway

F1's overseeing organization, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the circumstances

"Following a turn one incident, race control was notified that wreckage remained on the track at the critical section of that bend" stated the regulatory authority

"During the third lap, safety personnel were informed and put on alert to access the circuit and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send marshals were rescinded and a double yellow flag was raised in that zone"
