Apex Legends' Specialized Traversal Techniques Become Widely Accessible During This Update

The game developers have an exciting surprise prepared for the popular battle royale gamers, arriving just in time for festive season. Fans of the battle royale's super-slick traversal can rejoice to discover that a new movement mechanic is being implemented when the Amped season launches on November 4th.

Unveiling Mantle Boosting

Named "Momentum Boosting" by Respawn, this ability gives players a surge of forward momentum when scaling obstacles. According to key developer Eric Canavese, this technique was previously existed of Apex Legends for some time, often called as "ledge boosting." But it's challenging for casual gamers, and typically employed by competitive players in Ranked Mode or tournaments. This season, the team is making it easier for players of all skill levels to successfully perform these tricky movement boosts.

"Mantle Boosts existed in Apex for a while, but the movement requires skill to pull off and gamers might not realize it [is in the game] without outside knowledge," Canavese states. "We're adding a Mantle Boost indicator so players can clearly identify the timing to activate the fast-paced movement ability, opening up the mechanic and introducing new ways to compete for a much wider base."

Why Opening Up Advanced Mechanics

What's the reason for making a once niche technique accessible to all players? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan explains the team aims for players to feel powerful — including ones who are inexperienced.

"Our community performs other crazy stuff like super-glides and tap-strafing, and we examined at our competition, looked at what the community execute, and we wondered, 'How can we extend these capabilities to a broader audience?'" the designer explains. "Because right now, some of these advanced [movement] mechanics are somewhat awkward to access — you need to remap your keybinds and execute within one-frame windows. We proposed, 'What if we make a polished implementation?'"

The Amped Update Movement Focus

Mobility is primarily the name of the game in Season 27, with characters Horizon, Rampart, and Valkyrie all getting buffs to maintain them in motion. The cooldown period on her tactical ability is shorter, and this skill will propel users upward much quicker than before. Rampart's Amped Cover now include overhead protection and the ability to provide movement bonuses to those nearby. But the spotlight is on the high-flying this Legend receiving significant improvements this season, with multiple tweaks implemented to enhance her as more potent, quicker, and more lethal.

"In my opinion there's quite a consensus that her moment is here," says Legend designer the designer. "There's no doubt that she's been top-tier previously, but due to the addition of other characters, mobility perks, and Evac Towers, it seemed like she's not very relevant in today's Apex. It was a really great opportunity for the team to reexamine multiple elements in her abilities and sort of bring her back to former prominence."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To restore Valkyrie's relevance in the game's meta, Holstead notes the team evaluated all her skills and implemented significant modifications. Her VTOL Jets received improvements, boosting velocity during flight, and this equipment regenerates much quicker, allowing her to remain longer aloft. Now she won't be harmed from her ultimate ability, which was enhanced to mark enemies who are hit from the missiles. Her Skyward Dive skill — which launches her entire squad skyward for redeployment or escape — now takes much less time to activate. She's also getting some new Legend Upgrades that players can select to reduce fuel consumption, widen the area of her rockets, or further speed up her ultimate activation.

"Valkyrie's equipment fulfills that jet-fighter fantasy," Holstead comments.

Map Changes

Even the game's only floating arena, this location, receives a mobility-focused overhaul, with an extensive redesign that expands bottlenecks and renders securing elevated positions a bit less daunting. The developers says the game Season 27 is all about providing gamers the tools required to keep up with matches.

"Really, we were looking at Apex's core identity as a movement shooter," explains principal designer the lead.

The battle royale the Amped season launches November 4th at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
